Steel, Aluminium & Composite Side Gate Options

Steel Side Gates

The strongest and most economical option. Galvanised box-section construction with vertical slats, solid panels, or decorative bar infills. Powder-coated in matt black, anthracite grey, or any custom RAL.

Aluminium Side Gates

Naturally rust-resistant and significantly lighter than steel — ideal for coastal properties, salt-exposed environments, or where a lighter gate reduces strain on hinges and posts.

Composite Side Gates

A galvanised steel frame clad with low-upkeep composite boards in authentic wood-grain finishes. Combines the structural strength of steel with a timber-effect appearance — no sanding, staining or repainting required.

Side Gate Designs — Solid Panel, Slatted or Decorative

Choose solid panel side gates for maximum privacy and to deter intruders from observing the contents of your garden, vertical or horizontal slat designs for a contemporary appearance that allows airflow, or decorative bar infills for an ornamental finish that still provides excellent security. All designs can be supplied with self-closing hinges, anti-lift hinge sets, padlock hasps, and digital keypad locks.

Matching Side Gate Posts & Frames

We supply matching gate posts in galvanised steel or powder-coated finishes to ensure your installation looks fully co-ordinated. Posts are available in various sections (60mm, 80mm, 100mm) depending on the gate weight and your wall fixing requirements. Brick wall fixing kits, concrete-in posts, and steel-to-steel weld plates are all available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What height side gate do I need?

For security, a 6ft (1.8m) side gate is generally recommended, as it prevents most people from stepping over it and matches a standard boundary fence height. For decorative garden entrances, 3ft–4ft is typical. We can make any height you require — simply tell us your requirements when ordering.

Do I need planning permission for a side gate?

Generally no. Side gates up to 2 metres high do not require planning permission unless they are adjacent to a public highway (where the permitted height without permission is 1 metre), or if you are in a conservation area or listed building. Always check with your local planning authority if you are unsure.

What width do side gates come in?

All our side gates are made to measure in any width. Typical passage widths are between 700mm and 1,500mm (approximately 2.3ft to 5ft). Simply measure your gap and we will make the gate to fit precisely.

Can side gates be fitted with locks?

Yes. Our side gates come with an adjustable latch as standard and can be fitted with padlock hasps, lever handles with cylinder locks, barrel bolts, or keypad locks. Tell us your security requirements when ordering and we will advise on the most suitable hardware.
