A vertical bar driveway gate can carry straight into matching railings along the rest of the boundary wall; an ornate scrollwork design translates particularly well into a long railing run, where the repeating pattern reads as a single continuous feature rather than a one-off gate. Heights, Gaps and Where Railings Are Used
Railings serve several different jobs, and the right height and bar spacing depends on which one applies to you:
Garden and boundary railings mark an edge without necessarily needing to stop anyone climbing over — height here is mostly a style choice, though anything facing a footpath benefits from enough height to discourage casual access.
Balcony and terrace railings are a safety matter wherever there’s a meaningful drop below. As a general guide, railings on a raised balcony or terrace should be taller than a garden boundary railing, and the gaps between bars should be close enough that a small child couldn’t climb through or get a head caught between them. If you’re railing a balcony or raised terrace, it’s worth mentioning this to us when you order so we specify the gate to suit.
Stair and landing railings follow similar child-safety logic to balconies, generally a little lower than an external balcony railing but still close-barred.
Wall-top railings sit on an existing masonry wall rather than running to ground level — a popular option where a low garden wall needs a bit more height without rebuilding it.

Planning Permission for Railings
The same general rule that applies to garden fences applies to railings: next to a road, railings over roughly a metre tall usually need planning permission, and elsewhere the threshold is normally around two metres. Conservation areas can have tighter rules again. Worth a quick check with your local authority before you order anything unusually tall facing the street.
