How to Measure for a Gate
Complete Step-by-Step Guide — Get the perfect fit every time
Measuring correctly is the most important part of buying a new gate. Whether for a driveway, garden, or sliding gate, accurate measurements ensure smooth operation, security, and a professional finish. Follow our simple guide below.
Measure the Total Opening Width
Measure from the inside face of one post/pillar to the inside face of the opposite post/pillar at the top, middle, and bottom. Always use the smallest measurement as your guide — openings are rarely perfectly square.
- For single gates: measure the full width available
- For double gates: measure the full opening width
- Allow 20–50mm total clearance for hinges and opening gap
Measure the Height
Measure from the ground level to the top of where you want the gate to finish. Measure on both sides and in the centre — ground levels often differ.
- Measure at the lowest point to avoid the gate catching the ground
- Standard heights: 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.8m, 2.0m — or bespoke
- Allow 50–100mm clearance underneath for ground movement and drainage
Check Ground Conditions & Levels
Is the ground flat, sloping, or stepped? This affects whether you need a straight, raked, or stepped bottom rail. Sloping ground usually requires the gate to follow the slope or have a gap underneath.
Determine Hinge & Opening Side
Decide which way the gate opens (inwards or outwards) and which side the hinges will be fitted. Check for obstructions like walls, paths, or drains that could stop full movement.
Sliding Gate Extra Measurements
For sliding gates, you need space equal to at least the gate width alongside the opening for it to slide back into. Measure the full length required for the gate and the run-back space.
📏 Important Measuring Tips
- Always measure in millimetres (mm) — it’s more accurate
- Measure three times to be sure
- If ordering posts, measure from outside face to outside face
- Unsure? Send us your rough measurements and photos — we’ll help calculate exact sizes
Pro Tips from Our Team
Always double-check your measurements. The saying goes "measure twice, cut once" — and in gate manufacturing, it's absolutely true.
Photos with the measuring tape visible help us verify your dimensions if you're unsure.
If your opening slopes significantly, let us know. We can help with ground-level solutions.
If you're installing new posts, work with our team to ensure they're positioned correctly before you measure the opening.
It's better to have a slightly smaller gate that opens smoothly than one that catches. Extra clearance never hurt.
