How Bi-Fold Driveway Gates Work

Each gate leaf is split vertically. As it opens, the outer panel folds neatly onto the inner panel. Instead of needing a full 90° arc, it only uses around 50% of the depth required by an equivalent swinging gate. Modern hinge systems work without floor tracks or overhead rails, keeping your driveway completely clear.

Manual operation requires no extra equipment beyond hinges and latches. For automation, you will need a motor kit plus a mechanical folding lever system — automated versions open inwards only, and the motor is sized to handle the full width of the gate reliably.

Same Designs, Folding Configuration

Nearly all our designs can be built as bi-fold gates, but there is one detail to note: the vertical fold line runs straight through the gate. This means symmetrical or ornate patterns will show a visible break. Slatted, bar-style and contemporary designs hide the join best. Arched tops are possible, though the fold will still be noticeable.

Automation and Safety

The folding mechanism works differently from standard gates: the motor drives the inner section, while levers pull the outer panel into position. As mentioned, automated bi-fold gates open inwards only. All installations follow current safety standards, including safety edges and cut-off sensors to prevent trapping or impact.
