Frequently Asked Questions
What height side gate do I need?
For security, a 6ft (1.8m) side gate is generally recommended, as it prevents most people from stepping over it and matches a standard boundary fence height. For decorative garden entrances, 3ft–4ft is typical. We can make any height you require — simply tell us your requirements when ordering.
Do I need planning permission for a side gate?
Generally no. Side gates up to 2 metres high do not require planning permission unless they are adjacent to a public highway (where the permitted height without permission is 1 metre), or if you are in a conservation area or listed building. Always check with your local planning authority if you are unsure.
What width do side gates come in?
All our side gates are made to measure in any width. Typical passage widths are between 700mm and 1,500mm (approximately 2.3ft to 5ft). Simply measure your gap and we will make the gate to fit precisely.
Can side gates be fitted with locks?
Yes. Our side gates come with an adjustable latch as standard and can be fitted with padlock hasps, lever handles with cylinder locks, barrel bolts, or keypad locks. Tell us your security requirements when ordering and we will advise on the most suitable hardware.
