Description
These horizontal slat composite driveway gates use scale as their main design device. Across the wider driveway leaf, the composite boards are laid up thick and generous — each board reading as a substantial plank rather than a slim slat. On the pedestrian leaf, the boards continue horizontally but at a narrower profile, keeping the two leaves recognisable as a pair while giving the smaller gate a lighter visual weight appropriate to its size.
The oak-effect finish carries a subtle woodgrain pattern rather than a flat colour, so under raking morning light the surface shows the character you would expect from timber, without any of the maintenance timber demands. Black metal framing lines the perimeter of each leaf, hinting at the modern-industrial vocabulary many contemporary British homes now favour. A black locinox lever handle finishes the pedestrian gate.
Behind the wood-effect surface is a straightforward two-material construction — a metal frame doing the structural work, wood-plastic composite (WPC) infill boards handling the appearance and privacy. This split of responsibilities is why composite gates last longer than the equivalent timber design: the frame does not rot, and the composite does not depend on paint to survive the weather.
The 3/4 asymmetric split is well-suited to driveways where visitor pedestrians are a daily reality — postal deliveries, house guests, a family member returning by taxi — and opening the full width for every arrival would be an inconvenience. The narrow leaf gives foot access without disturbing the main gate. When a vehicle needs through, the wide leaf swings open and the pedestrian leaf can either stay closed or open alongside for full-width access.
Colour options for the WPC boards cover a variety of shades from the pale oak shown here through mid-browns to deeper walnut and near-black finishes. Frame colour is specified separately and can either match the boards or provide contrast. All sizing is bespoke — leaf widths, overall height, split ratio and hardware position are set at survey against your actual opening rather than pulled from a catalogue.
